Spring Plumbing Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners

Spring is a great time to give your home’s plumbing system a little extra attention. A few simple inspections can help identify leaks, worn components, and other potential problems before they turn into more costly repairs.

Here are some important plumbing areas to include in your spring home maintenance checklist.

Check for Leaks

Look under sinks, around toilets, near plumbing fixtures, and around your water heater for signs of moisture, corrosion, staining, or active leaks. Even a small leak can waste water over time and potentially cause damage if it goes unnoticed.

Check Your Water Heater

Inspect the area around your water heater for signs of leaking, corrosion, unusual noises, or changes in hot water performance. Tank-style water heaters can accumulate sediment over time, which may affect their operation and efficiency.

Maintenance needs vary depending on the type, age, and condition of your water heater, as well as the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you’re unsure whether your water heater needs maintenance or flushing, a plumbing professional can inspect the unit and recommend the appropriate service.

Clean Faucet Aerators

Mineral deposits and debris can accumulate inside faucet aerators and restrict water flow. Removing and cleaning the aerator may help restore normal flow.

If water pressure remains low after cleaning the aerator, particularly at multiple fixtures, there may be another issue within the plumbing system that should be inspected.

Test Outdoor Faucets

Turn on outdoor hose bibs and check the faucets and connections for dripping, leaking, or visible damage. Even with Southern California’s relatively mild climate, outdoor plumbing is exposed to the elements and can develop wear over time.

Inspect Washing Machine Hoses

Check washing machine supply hoses for cracks, bulging, corrosion, or other visible signs of deterioration. Because these hoses remain under water pressure, a damaged hose can fail unexpectedly and release a significant amount of water.

Pay Attention to Changes in Your Plumbing

Spring maintenance is also a good opportunity to notice anything that seems different around your home. Changes in water pressure, unexplained increases in water usage, recurring leaks, unusual plumbing noises, or inconsistent hot water may indicate that your plumbing system needs attention.

A little preventative attention can go a long way toward keeping your home’s plumbing working properly throughout the year.
